Polar Bear Infanticide & Cannibalism
18 images Created 28 Jan 2011
A male polar bear (Ursus maritimus) carrying the remains of a first year cub it killed and cannibalised. As the cub was almost completely eaten, it's assumed that the bear ate the cub in an attempt to curb its hunger. Polar bears congregate along the shores in small geographic area; they are hungry from the previous summer season and are waiting for the sea ice to form, so they can hunt their favoured food source, the ringed seal.
